The
Toy Chest

Molly woke up in a dark box surrounded by other toys.
Nervousness and excitement raced through the little dolly as she looked around
and realized she was in a toy chest. She stood up to meet her new friends.

The other toys had gathered around the new doll. The toy
chest had always been a special place with special rules. Tabitha the Tablet
was the leader of the toys. She was the first to greet Molly.
“Hello, welcome to the toy chest.” Tabitha said.
“Hi, I am very excited to meet all of you! I have always
wanted to be purchased, so I can make lots of friends and play all day.” Molly
said.
“Let me introduce you to the rest of the toys here.”
Tabitha said.
Page 3
“This is Tommy the Top, Ronnie the Racecar, and Paul the
Puppy.” Tabitha said.
“It is so nice to meet you all, I just know that we are
going to be the best friends.” Molly said. She was a happy little dolly, and
she always tried to do the right thing.
“Would it be alright if I looked around the toy chest?”
Molly asked.
“Yes” Tabitha answered, “But remember that we are your only
friends here, the other toys are broken, so you should not talk to them.”
Page 4
Tabitha’s warning made Molly feel strange. She did not
want to treat the other toys differently because they were broken, but she also
didn’t want her new friends to be upset with her.
She decided to at least go look around the toy chest.
Molly’s excitement returned as she was exploring the toy chest. She loved her
beautiful new home. She climbed through building blocks that had been stacked
to make a castle.

When Molly reached one edge of the chest she found a
broken toy robot facing the corner. Molly did not know what to do, she wanted
to talk to the robot because she thought they could be good friends and she
might even be able to help fix his broken arm, but she knew that her new toy
friends would be mad at her for talking to a broken toy.

Molly left the robot and went back to the center of the
chest where her friends were waiting.
Tabitha asked “What did you think of the toy chest Molly?”
Molly knew that she shouldn’t mention the robot toy.
“It was all very beautiful and I am very excited to be
here.” Molly said.
“Good, we are excited to have you with us Molly we all
thing that you will make a good addition to our group.” Tabitha said.

The next day Molly was playing with Ronnie. They were
taking turns to see who could run from one side of the toy chest to the other
the fastest. Ronnie won almost every time, but Molly didn’t mind she was just
enjoying spending time with her new friends.

“Are you liking everything here in the toy chest Molly?”
Ronnie asked.
“Yes, I really like it here.” Molly said.
“Good! Have you done any exploring?” said Ronnie.
Molly thought for a while and decided she could talk to
Ronnie about the Robot toy she saw when she was exploring.
“I have really enjoyed looking around the toy chest. The
other day when I was exploring I found a robot toy…”
Page 9
“I hope you didn’t talk to that broken old robot. Don’t
you remember the rules of the toy chest Molly?” Ronnie said.
“I didn’t talk to the robot.” Molly said. She wished that
she hadn’t said anything about the robot to Ronnie.
Molly listened to Ronnie’s warning of following the rules
of the toy chest. She stopped exploring and tried to forget about the robot toy
she had found.

One day Molly was playing Tic-Tac-Toe with Tabitha, when
she heard steps coming toward the center of the toy chest. She looked around to
see who was making the noise. Then she saw the robot come from around the
corner. Tabitha and the other toys
started teasing the robot.
“You can be in this part of the toy chest! You are
broken!” Tabitha said.
“Only good toys like us are allowed in here.” Paul said.
“Go back to where you belong.” Tommy agreed.
Page 11
The robot toy looked right at Molly. She did not know what
to do she didn’t want to be mean to the robot, but she couldn’t break the rules
and go against her friends.
Molly looked back and forth between the robot toy and her
friends.
She finally said, “Get out of here robot! Can’t you see
you are not as good as us?”
Page 12
Molly’s friends cheered, but she was disappointed in
herself. As the robot rolled away Molly knew that she had made a mistake. She
felt very bad for having said mean things to the robot. She did not agree with
the rules of the toy chest, but she had followed them.
Her thoughts and feelings did not match her actions. This
confused the little doll. Molly did not know what to do. Her desire to fit in
had caused her to say things that she did not agree with.
Page 13
Molly decided she needed to go talk to the robot toy, and
apologize for the things she had said. She went to search for him. She found
the robot toy in the same place she had seen him in the first time.
“Hi, my name is Molly. I came to tell you I am sorry for
what I said to you. I don’t think that you are a bad toy because of your arm. I
wanted to be your friend, but Tabitha has all of these rules that said I
couldn’t be friends with you.” Molly said.
Page 14
“You don’t have to follow Tabitha’s rules.” The robot
said.
“I know that now. I am not going to think the way that
they want me to anymore. I need to do things because I think they are the right
things to do instead of just agreeing with Tabitha. Can you forgive me?” Molly
asked.
“Yes I forgive you. I think that we could be friends
Molly, but I want you to promise me one thing.” The robot said.
Page 15
“What?” Molly asked.
“Promise me that you will base you actions off of what you
think is right not off of other peoples rules.”
“I promise!” Molly said.
Molly and the robot quickly became very good friends. They
would play lots of fun games. Molly was happy and comfortable again because her
actions matched her thoughts about what is wrong and what is right.
